About

A small institution for shared software infrastructure.

The Ranger Group works with public-service and mission-driven organizations that depend on open source and want to become more capable participants in the ecosystems behind it.

The work is part research practice, part advisory partner, part tool-builder, and part bridge between institutions and the communities that sustain shared software.

Vision

Healthier open-source ecosystems for mission-driven work.

We imagine public and mission-driven institutions that can see what they depend on, make thoughtful choices, care for dependencies over time, and work together across organizational boundaries to strengthen shared infrastructure. Some solutions should not have to be rebuilt city by city, agency by agency, or organization by organization.

Mission

Help organizations care for the open-source infrastructure their missions depend on.

That starts with visibility and better decisions, but it does not stop there. Ranger helps teams build practical habits, useful tools, and stronger relationships with the people and projects their work depends on.

Theory of action

Move organizations from passive consumption toward active stewardship.

Organizations are bounded by budgets, mandates, jurisdictions, departments, procurement rules, and governance structures. Open-source ecosystems are not. Ranger works in that gap by helping institutions build the visibility, practices, tools, relationships, and support mechanisms that make responsible participation possible.

The goal is not for Ranger to stand permanently between organizations and open-source communities. The goal is to help organizations become more capable participants in the ecosystems their missions already depend on.

How Ranger helps

The work changes shape around the problem.

Sometimes a team needs research. Sometimes it needs a workflow, a policy, a tool, a community relationship, or a way to support a project upstream. Ranger combines the right forms of help around the decision in front of you.

The Ranger Group is led by Allen Smith, an open source strategist and technologist whose three-decade professional background spans open source, public service, and nonprofit work.
